About Trish Martin
Founder of Unlocking The Reading Code
After 25 years as a speech pathologist, Trish Martin has spent the last 15 years teaching and promoting the fundamental building blocks of literacy through a revolutionary, evidence and scientifically-based instructional series.

What is Rewiring

We begin with the most basic question: What is ‘Rewiring the Brain’? Up until recent years, scientists originally thought that the brain became stagnant and stopped developing after the first few years of life. This ‘hardwire’ theory was constructed on the belief that the neuron-to-neuron cell network within the brain was fixed and immobile, thus preventing the possibility of establishing new neural connections.
Today’s research has changed this paradigm from ‘hardwire’ to ‘rewire’ forever. Now scientists know that the brain is plastic and can continue to grow new cells throughout an individual’s lifetime. Neurons are capable of connecting to other cells as they blaze new neural pathways in the brain. Neuroplasticity defines the ability of the brain to restructure itself based on repetitive practices if done correctly.
This brain plasticity will occur only in an attending or focused brain, making paying close attention to what you are doing a requirement to successfully drive and strengthen neurologic pathways. We now know that YOU have the power to remodel and improve your brain.
No longer is it acceptable to have such high numbers of our students not reading at grade level.
According to the U.S. Department of Education more than 60% of K-12 school aged children are reading below the level of proficiency needed to read the classroom text book. Children master the 44 sounds of the English language, the 6 syllable types and an amazing, fun motivational tool called ‘fish hooking’ which allows your children or loved ones to become independent ‘word detectives’ while increasing their motivation and focus to figure it out themselves.
This program will help…
- Students who has been diagnosed eith dyslexia and/or learning disabilities
- Students having difficulty with reading and spelling will learn how to get the words off the page bringing them up to grade level.
- Students that were already reading and writing at grade level will make significant improvements far surpassing where they were before.
ORTHOGRAPHY
NEU Spelling & Orthography: Rewiring the Brain to Accelerate Learning has been successful and explicitly teaching the Common Core State Standards since 2004, six years prior to the CCSS being published in 2010.
Teachers will be taught that the most common spelling errors are within twin pair sounds taught in NEU Reading. Students learn that the Spelling of English is more than just learning the sounds associated with the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet as in ‘b’ says /buh/.
Students learn that spelling requires an understanding of four languages: Anglo-Saxon, Latin, Greek and French. Students master the orthographic representations of the 19 vowels sounds along with the orthographic representations of the 25 consonant sounds from the four word origin languages.
